Last week (just the day before our Volunteer Recruitment webinar) The Australian Bureau of Statistics released the latest data from their General Social Survey, conducted in 2019. There is some really interesting findings in the data. Notably, environment and and animal welfare (grouped together) attracted 6% of the overall volunteers. The most common types of organisations for which people volunteered were those relating to sport and physical recreation (39.1% of volunteers), religious groups (23.3%) and education and training (21.8%). Interestingly, here in environment and animal welfare we have more male volunteers than female which differs from the stats overall where females more commonly volunteer than males (43.0% of female volunteers compared to 32.9% of males). Also, this latest data shows a steep decline in volunteering within community organisations and non profits in Australia. In fact a 20% decrease since 2014! This is contradictory to the data I have been using from Volunteering Australia and indeed differs from what was presented in the webinar last week, so my sincere apologies to all those who attended or who are watching the replay. I've spent a significant part of today sifting through the new data and popped a summary together for you on my blog. You can find it here a Forever Agenda website. What is your experience with the number of volunteers you work with? What are your volunteeer recruitment strategies?
