Bird Monitoring in a Post-fire Landscape

Join us for a hands-on workshop in the heart of the Little Desert, where you'll develop practical skills in bird monitoring within fire-affected landscapes.

Agenda

This workshop explores the fascinating ways birds respond to fire, from post-fire foraging shifts in insectivores and nectarivores, to breeding responses across fire-resilient guilds. You'll gain a deeper understanding of species biology and behaviour, and learn how to apply this knowledge responsibly in the field.

What You'll Learn

Participants will learn about industry-recognised methodologies from ornithologist Jonathan Starks and ecologist Dr. Elia Pirtle over the course of an informative presentation at the Nhill Learning Centre. You'll also learn about Bird Permanent Unit Count Stations (PUCS) and how we are using them as part of our Fire Recovery Project.

Hands-On Experience

Following the presentation and a complimentary lunch, participants are invited to take part in a practical monitoring demonstration at the Keith Hateley Nature Reserve (a 20 min drive from the Nhill Learning Centre) to see how birds are responding to the most recent bushfires in the area.

Remember to bring sturdy shoes, rain/wind resistant clothing, and binoculars for spotting birds during the practical element of this event.

Morning tea, lunch, and hot drinks will be provided. Please include any dietary requirements when registering.

Bring your friends and family but please leave your dogs at home.


This workshop forms part of the Project Platypus Fire Recovery Project, which is working to monitor and restore biodiversity on private conservation properties impacted by the 2024–2025 bushfires.

With support from DEECA and Wimmera CMA, the project is partnering with landholders to better understand how wildlife is responding after fire and to guide on-ground recovery actions. The skills and tools shared in this workshop contribute directly to that effort, helping build a clearer picture of species return and long-term landscape recovery.
