Volunteer Recruitment & Group Management

The Unlocked Potential of Community Volunteers

24-06-2022 07:00

Since 2013, Perth NRM have been engaged in a Community Capacity Assessment to determine the capacity of environmental community volunteers within the Swan Region to carry out efforts of environmental restoration. Four surveys, measuring capacity via a four capitals framework of human (skills and knowledge), social (networks and relationships), financial (money and assets), and organisational (governance and management) capitals to determine capacity gaps, have provided key knowledge into the workings of environmental volunteer groups. Highlighting insights such as how environmental volunteer groups are organised, funded and supported, who they are working with, as well as understanding personal motivations and the time spent doing fieldwork and administrative tasks, the Community Capacity Assessment also provides suggestions for environmental groups looking to improve their standing. Most notably, volunteers stressed their desire to increase capacity across all four areas, pointing to the improved capability potential possible across environmental groups.
