Hi Landcarers

We just received the exciting news that we have been successful in our application for a WIRES / Landcare Wildlife Relief & Recovery Grant for our 'High Country Hamlets - Casurianas for Cockies' project.  Thanks so much WIRES / Landcare!  So, we thought we would introduce the project through the new Landcarers Community.

Where is High Country Hamlets?

The HCH area is the part of the Toowoomba Region in Queensland, extending from Highfields in the south to Cooyar in the north and from the edge of the Toowoomba Escarpment in the east roughly 50km west. If you want to visit the region see: https://www.highcountryhamlets.com.au/.

Who is inolved?

The project is being coordinated by Friends of Land for Wildlife Inc in cooperation with:

Why the project?

Bushfires and drought in HCH have decimated swathes of she-oaks that are feed trees for the threatned glossy black cockatoos. The project aims to plant up to 1000 black, forest and woolly sheoaks that are prefered glossy black feed trees in HCH and raise awareness of glossy blacks in the Toowoomba Region.

What is the project?

The project consists of:

  • Planting up to 1000 she-oaks at 14 sites in HCH on both public and private land, including via a Volunteer Planting Day for the public sites
  • Erecting interperative signage at the public sites.
  • Holding the Gummingurru and Casuarinas for Cockies event including an inspection of a grove planted as part of the project, training by the Glossy Black Conservancy, update on Lockyer Upper Catchments Inc research into Casuarina dieback and collaboration with the Jarowair custodians of the Gummingurru Ceremonial Site via a Welcome to Country, Smoking Ceremony and tour of the site's stone arrangements.
  • A citizen science project to encourage Toowoomba locals and visitors to record glossy black sightings.

We are just at the projects beginning, but will update here regularly ....
