Gold Coast City has been leading the way in ecological restoration with over 3,000 hectares of land restored over the last 21 years, equivalent to 6,000 football fields. This work has been undertaken by teams of skilled bush regenerators in over 300 projects, with assistance from community at more than 25 sites.

“As our city grows in population, it’s crucial we remain dedicated to protecting our green and open space,” Mayor Tom Tate said.

“Through our NaturallyGC Landcare program we’re restoring our natural environment one tree at a time and I thank every volunteer – all 3,000 of them – for their contribution.”

The City of Queensland is responsible for the management and conservation of over 800 bushland parks, reserves and conservation areas totalling more than 13,000 hectares across the Gold Coast.

The community has been able to help care for these natural areas through the Landcare program, with 60,000 trees planted annually and 400 regular members.

The program coordinates and supports many group activities, including Australia’s largest littoral rainforest restoration project through community planting days at Federation Walk, The Spit. Volunteers are helping the City to plant over 10,000 native plants each year to rejuvenate and protect the reserve.
