The Hawkesbury Nepean Riverkeepers hosted a training day on assessing riparian health using "Rapid Appraisal of Riparian Conditions". It turned out to be a fun day in the field learning techniques to assess catchment health. Riparian habitats are where terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems meet. They are vital sites in a catchment supporting high levels of biodiversity. Given the extensive degradation of riparian zones in Australia, there is a need for a rapid method of measuring riparian conditions to underpin strategies for improved management. The Rapid Appraisal of Riparian Condition index is made up of five sub-indices, each with a number of indicator variables: On the day we will be learning about Habitat, Vegetation cover and structural complexity, Debris, natives vs exotics and features of a river corridor. These characteristics provide a good indication of the biodiversity and function of a riparian zone. Upskill yourself, contribute to gaining scientific knowledge, and help us collect data to report on the health of the Hawkesbury-Nepean River.
