Cobwebs in the Grass

With all the beauty there is in nature, I want to take a moment to celebrate the small creatures who go about their business unnoticed and mostly unappreciated. Their presence is a sign that all is good in the world and we need to see more of them. Their beauty is in the eye of the beholder if you take the time to really look. But more than the physical, it is the harmony they create by the work they do in this web of life. Micro and macro organisms in and about the soil working with the plants to provide them with access to minerals and nutrients, oxygen and water. The natural cycle of life of creatures living and dying, building deep healthy soils, healthy plants and creatures in balance. Insects pollinating, combating pests and disease. All this contributing to the kaleidoscope of flora and fauna in our landscape.

So next time you take an early morning stroll, look for the signs of these magnificent small creatures. The cobwebs stretched between the grass blades glistening with the early morning dew. The tiny spiders trying not to be noticed. Bend down and look at the base of a perennial grass to see what looks like tiny black thunder clouds, which is natures ‘black gold’ fertiliser — earthworm castings. And really look at the small insects, their markings and the ways they disguise themselves for their hunting prowess and own survival. Nature really is amazing, so please take the time to look and see.
