Tarwin Landcare Group's grand tour of Meeniyan Wastewater Treatment Plant

South Gippsland Water (SGW) gave Tarwin Landcare Group (TLG) a behind the scenes look at the Meeniyan Wastewater Treatment Plant in late September!

SGW representative, Mick Fawcett, met the group at the recently constructed bird hide before giving them a tour of the
six lagoons which make up the wastewater treatment plant. Mick explained that the lagoons’ design takes advantage of the sterilizing effect of the sun’s UV rays to remove e-coli from the water.

Indigenous reeds and rushes filter nutrients and sediment as the water moves through the lagoons before being reused on the nearby racecourse, golf course and recreation reserve.

The lagoons, which are surrounded by a fox-deterring fence, are also a haven for birds and frogs.
