Peter brings a powerful combination of leadership, advocacy and influence springing from his decades long commitment to improving stewardship of our planet’s future. Including as a former Australian Government Minister for the Environment, Peter has long championed conservation, climate action, Indigenous rights and stronger biodiversity protection. With a strong record of supporting community‑led land stewardship through policy, funding and advocacy, and known globally as the frontman of Midnight Oil, Peter plans to use his “force for good” to support the work of the landcare movement.

Importantly, Peter was there at the very beginning of landcare. As President of the Australian Conservation Foundation, he worked alongside Phillip Toyne and the National Farmers’ Federation’s Rick Farley and other environment organisations to advocate for the establishment of the National Landcare Programme and the independent not for profit, Landcare Australia, to the Hawke government.

We extend our sincere thanks to Doug Humann AM for his outstanding leadership since 2016. Doug strengthened partnerships across government, corporate and philanthropic sectors, deepened engagement with First Nations Peoples, and championed the next generation of landcare leaders.

Doug has played a pivotal role in transforming Landcare Australia over the last decade. He has strengthened governance, broadened and deepened relationships across the landcare community, and positioned Landcare Australia for growth to enable the work of the vigorous landcare community across Australia.

From supporting the work of landcare volunteers, farmers and landholders, to advocating for the next generation to lead with landcare, Doug has been at the forefront of promoting why Australia needs landcare. His efforts have ensured that people back landcare and recognise the significant achievements of the landcare movement in their efforts to restore, enhance and protect Australis’s land, water, soils, plants, animals and ecosystems.

As chair, Doug created space for the establishment of the First Nations Landcare Working Group, an advisory body to the Landcare Australia board, formally launched in 2023 at Parliament House, Canberra. His legacy is his leadership of Landcare Australia’s commitment to fostering collaboration with First Nations people and organisations through the Working Group and across the Landcare Australia team. This achievement marks a significant step towards achieving environmental sustainability in Australia.

We thank Doug for his service and warmly welcome Peter to Landcare Australia.
