Winona, a study in resilience based on regenerative agriculture

After losses following major bushfires, The Colin’s family sought innovation in the establishment of a low-input agricultural system. Commencing in 1993, the Winona innovations of pasture cropping, multi-species pasture cropping for high quality stock feed and soil restoration, time controlled rotational grazing, and vertical stacking of enterprises (cropping, native grass seed, sheep wool and meat), the Colin’s family are now experiencing innovator benefits. Not only reducing annual input costs by over $120,000, these innovations have seen soil carbon increase by 203% in 10 years, the delivery of three production lines from each paddock, and improved wool quality.

Soils For Life has worked tirelessly to uncover and promote the stories of farmer innovators across the country for almost a decade. Championing innovative case studies across Australia, Soil For Life is focussed on a future of healthy, regenerated soils and landscapes, nutritious and abundant food, productive and profitable food and fibre systems, and resilient and connected communities.
