The Rainbow Beach Ice Man was out spotting turtles in the past week and took to Facebook to report on the relocation of turtle nests!

“We found two turtle nests yesterday about 30m apart, Well done to Muzza the Turtle whisper!" the post reads.

“Please be mindful that it is the turtle nesting season, and they are about.

“The first (nest) had 131 eggs and the second 137. Now all safely relocated to higher ground.

Lindy Orwin from Cooloola Coastcare TurtleCare said special training is required to relocate turtle eggs.

“Muzza is a fully trained and permit holding TurtleCare volunteer as well as an awesome Iceman offsider and all round good guy,” she said.

“Only trained, permit holding people like Muzza and QPWS Rangers can touch turtle eggs but you can help by reporting the tracks or turtles you see nesting.”

Lindy recommends members of the public to take photos on their phone (because that includes a GPS marker) and then call Coastcare’s TurtleCare hotline to report turtle tracks or nesting behaviour on 0493 511 207.

“Many people might not know that turtle eggs can ‘drown’ if they are laid below the high tide line too close to the water,” Lindy said.

“This is common in times like this where seas are rough and beaches are severely eroded.

“The nests can also be squashed or compacted by traffic driving over them or too close to them, so please stay off the dunes and drive only a couple of hours either side of low tide on the hard sand close to the water,” she said.
