Good morning all I am doing some research on possible control methods on feral honey bees in Eucalyptus remnant bushland in the Western Australian wheatbelt and I am seeking as much information as possible please. At this stage it is something that is being considered only and may not be a viable option given the the areas that we cover. Any info, suggestions of websites/resources that anyone could suggest would be great and I thankyou in advance.

    • Are there any other government departments have undertook bee control in bushland?
    • Methods using for surveying bushland for feral bees?
    • Methods used for controlling feral bees once located?
    • Any specific laws around feral bee control? I have got a list of the W.A Laws etc but if there is anything else?Does anyone participating in this control needs to be a registered pest technician?, I know if using pesticides and insecticides yes you need to be a trained an licensed pest technician.
        Kind Regards

      Hi Tammy,

Hopefully the below links can help with a few of your questions!

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment & Water have a webpage devoted to Invasive Bees. They speak about the European honey bee, Bumble bees, and Asian honey bees.

The Department of Primary Industries has a webpage reporting on their eradication of the Varroa mite, and consequently the eradication of wild European honeybees within a specific zone of NSW. They talk of using a commonly available insecticide called Fipronil - and further down the page they have an FAQ section which may be of use.

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Biosecurity QLD have a factsheet called, 'Guidelines for industry - destroying swarms or nests of Asian honey bees.' You can also view applications of their recommended guidelines in a short YouTube video at www.youtube.com/ biosecurityqld. The video also shows two other products that can be used in different situations to destroy AHB swarms and nests.

      I hope that helps!

Many thanks Emily, I did already come across those links. There is a big lack of information/research on feral European Honey bee management and control in Eucalyptus Woodlands in the wheatbelt and due to the surrounding pastoral and agricultural areas can be a bit of a challenging/controversial topic. Thankyou again
