There's a million and one ways to remove a tick. Everyone and their grandma claims to have the best method - but which one is correct?
The answer is; it depends.
In the past, we've been told to grab the tick as close to your skin as possible with tweezers, and pull, doing your best to not squeeze the body of the tick in the process. When I've done this, I've been aiming to remove the embedded head as cleanly as possible, without leaving anything stuck underneath my skin.
Other methods include killing the tick with a product that will rapidly freeze it. As it turns out, this is the method currently recommended by the Australian Government.
If you're allergic to ticks, it's imperative that you:
- Carry an action plan and EpiPen
- Kill the tick with a product that will rapidly freeze it
- Go to a hospital or similar safe place to have the tick removed
