Nell Chaffey is a dedicated landcare advocate, embodying a profound commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement. Her journey began four decades ago when she planted the first trees on their family farm, which have since flourished into wildlife corridors criss-crossing the property. Nell's approach to landcare is characterised by a lifelong dedication to learning, embracing trial and error as essential components of her journey. She perceives mistakes as opportunities for growth and continuously seeks to refine her methods through ongoing learning opportunities and hands-on experimentation.
In the late 1980s, Nell's passion for the Australian landscape led her to join the Manilla Landcare group, driven by a deep-seated belief in the importance of biodiversity. When the organization dissolved, she transitioned to the Bubbogullion 100 Landcare Group, actively participating in meetings and hosting gatherings at their home in Somerton to this day. Her enduring involvement with Bubbogullion 100, the oldest incorporated group in North West NSW, spans over two decades, reflecting her steadfast commitment to the Landcare movement.
Nell's contributions extend beyond her local Landcare groups. She has played a pivotal role in the formation of the Tamworth Regional Landcare Association (TRLA), previously known as the Tamworth Manilla Landcare Association, showcasing her leadership and collaborative spirit. Additionally, she served as a member of the Northern Inland Council for the Environment (NICE), advocating for environmental conservation at a broader regional level.
As the Minutes Secretary of TRLA since 2014, Nell supports the smooth functioning of the organization, diligently managing communications and facilitating meetings. She also assists in organizing educational initiatives, exemplifying her dedication to fostering learning within the Landcare and broader community.
Nell's values of integrity, advocacy, and inclusivity permeate her work in Landcare. Her unwavering belief in speaking out against environmental injustices, coupled with her strong work ethic, reflects her commitment to effecting positive change. Inspired by her father's mantra of "Good, better, best," she continually strives for excellence in all her endeavours.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Nell's personal ethos is rooted in empathy and responsibility. As the eldest child in her family, she learned the value of caring for others from a young age, a principle she has carried into her roles as a teacher, mother of four and grandmother of five. Her purpose-driven approach to landcare is a testament to her desire to make a tangible difference, both on their farm and within the broader community.
Nell embodies the essence of a true landcare champion, embodying the values of lifelong learning, integrity, and compassion. Her enduring commitment and tireless advocacy serve as a beacon of inspiration, illustrating the transformative power of individual action within the landcare movement.
In 2025, Nell Chaffey won the Women in Landcare Award at the 2025 National Landcare Awards.
