Landcare Led Bushfire Recovery Grants Program

27-08-2022 09:54

The Landcare Led Bushfire Recovery Grants Program was quickly established as a partnership program to support community action to recover wildlife and habitats following the devastating 2019-20 bushfires across south-east Australia. Rowan Ewing and program representatives from state and territory landcare groups discuss.

This presentation will show how partnerships at all levels were critical to the Program’s success, enabling more 10,000 volunteers and over 700 other groups and organisations, to support community and environmental recovery from the Black Summer Bushfires through 111 projects.

In addition to detailing the project delivery, Rowan outlines the importance of Landcare as a central element in bringing communities and stakeholders together in environmental recovery. In addition to outlining how funding Landcare builds partnerships and mobilises on-ground action and, the presentation will also explore how it leads to greater engagement in disaster recovery activity.

Presenter/s: Rowan Ewing, Dr Maxine Cooper, Dr Turlough Guerin, Landcare Australia, National Landcare Network and Program representatives from state and territory Landcare Organisations

This presentation really told a great story about speed of mobilisation and effective collaboration between Landcare and Government.  Importantly, it  highlighted the need for clear roles to be defined across agencies, and the need for skilled coordinators to be supported so that funding can flow swiftly to the on-ground community wanting to make positive things happen.  It would be great to see these lessons adopted in Non-Emergency circumstances to enable projects focused on prevention and resilience enhancement to flourish.
