In 2016, two native pasture trial sites were selected in the Tambo Valley, East Gippsland, to demonstrate how grazing management and soil fertility could be utilised to improve pasture production and feed the quality of native pastures whilst minimising soil erosion. At each site, two areas were monitored: a control area (i.e. farmers’ usual practices); and a treatment area (i.e. grazing management and the application of phosphorus fertiliser). In this presentation, pasture agronomist Dr Mitchell from Agriculture Victoria explores what high country pastures are and why they are important, then presents the results of the Top Soils project to show how we can get more out of our native pastures.
