In the face of soaring temperatures, dust storms, scorched earth and shrinking water sources, Landcare Broken Hill launched ‘Greening the Hill’ in April 2019 as a multifaceted community initiative to tackle the extremes of climate change. To foster change and address environmental issues at both the grassroots and government level, Greening the Hill is comprised of two main project arms: Call To Action and Role for Everyone. Where the fifteen Role for Everyone projects were aimed to upskill the local community, with practical on-the-ground greening projects, the thirty-nine Call to Action projects campaigned for public awareness and education. Forming partnerships with both ABC Radio and the local community radio, Landcare Broken Hill completed over seventy interviews on topics from high level policy analysis of sustainability principles to practical gardening tips to grow better vegetables, all to prompt climate action. Bolstered by social media, monthly public meetings, and regular media releases, Greening the Hill has determinedly and ambitiously sought to change behaviour — informing the public on topics of renewables, waste and water management, sustainability, conservation, and land management in the process.
