The Healthy Rivers Project
The rivers of the Murray Darling Basin are vital water resources, home to 120 native bird and more than 50 fish species. Unfortunately, they have suffered due to previous land clearing, and extreme flooding events. With funding from the Australian Government Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water in partnership with broadacre farmers, Fisheries NSW, Local Land Services NSW, and OzFish Unlimited, Landcare Australia is enhancing biodiversity, especially in riparian areas, floodplains, and wetlands.
So far, together we've achieved:
  • Planted several thousand seedlings and conducted ecological restoration on six sites within the Namoi catchment.
  • Installed multiple in-stream habitat structures for fish.
  • Supported the improvement of 65 hectares of degraded floodplain, riparian, and wetland habitat within the Namoi River Catchment.
  • Ensured all native seedlings were locally sourced.
  • Overcame multiple flooding events.
