Beaudesert Landcare is asking for volunteers to help identify areas where platypus can be found in the Scenic RimBeaudesert Landcare secretary Maryann Goggins said the conservation group was trying to find platypus that survived the recent floods across the region.
"Platypus have litters in January, which means the babies wouldn't have had much chance in the February floods. "They can live in rivers, in creeks, and in farm dams. They could be closer than you think in the Scenic Rim," she said.
Ms Goggins said the Australian Conservation Foundation, in conjunction with the University of New South Wales was trying to fill in gaps in our knowledge of platypus, and to help save them.
"So with spring upon us, have picnics, and check creeks and farm dams for signs of platypus, we're asking locals to help us with research on where they are, or aren't," she said.
"If you know where platypus once were, it's important so please let us know. If you're interested in saving platypus, or in the fate of platypus in the Scenic Rim, Beaudesert Landcare is asking you to help us find platypus habitat and document the platypus habitat and sightings."Take a photo and text us with the date and place of the sighting or ring Maryann on 0408 249 655 or Robin on 0427 781 257."Ms Goggins said the group would record the sightings and pass on the information so that their habitat may be
protected and their behaviours recorded.
"Platypus needs your help," she said. "Please have a picnic this spring and spot a platypus in your local waterway."
