Country Needs People: Request For Expressions Of Interest for Indigenous land and sea management (ILSM) staff and contractors.

About Country Needs People:

  • Country Needs People (CNP) is a small non-profit organisation that supports Indigenous communities to protect, maintain, and restore biodiversity and sustain, strengthen, and pass on cultural practices on Country.
  • We advocate for strong Indigenous Land and Sea Management (ILSM) support from state and federal governments and provide practical assistance to Indigenous peoples managing or aspiring to manage their Country.

Working with Indigenous organisations

We work together with an extensive network of Indigenous partner organisations around Australia to help strengthen their operations and readiness to manage their land and sea Country. This work sometimes involves providing practical assistance to Indigenous organisations who manage or are aspiring to manage their Country. This can include but not be limited to - land and sea management, governance support, spatial planning, assisting with community and stakeholder consultation processes, planning for Indigenous protected areas and ranger teams, preparing proposals for government, writing grant applications, liaising with state or federal governments, and more. We also work closely with our Indigenous partners network to strategically advocate to state and federal governments around policy and funding improvements for the sector.

Expressions of Interest

Country Needs People is seeking expressions of interest from experienced people to work with us. We are especially keen to hear from Indigenous people with any of these skills or experience.

CNP would like to grow our list of potential staff or contractors who are able to support the range of work we do with our Indigenous partner organisations across Australia. We are interested to see who may have the skills, interest and values alignment to potentially work with us - please note this is not a job or contract offer at this point.

We are not seeking contacts with businesses or social enterprises at this point other than individual contractors or potential employees.

We are looking for people who:

  • Want to grow and support Australia's Indigenous protected areas and Indigenous rangers.
  • Are able to work flexibly and independently in various locations.
  • Have a strong affinity to working constructively in a team environment and ability to collaborate with others to adapt to whatever tasks are required.
  • Can understand and are willing to contribute to overall organisational aims.

Skills/training required

We are keen to hear from you if you have skills and/or experience in any or all of these areas:

  • Working with Indigenous land and sea management groups.
  • Undertaking planning and consultation work for Indigenous protected areas, such as preparing Country Plans, IPA plans, strategic plans and related advice or planning.
  • Supporting Indigenous organisations with their planning and organisational capacity building.
  • Designing and managing land or sea management projects and contracts, related procurement.
  • Monitoring and reporting on key ILSM projects.
  • Managing or coordinating Indigenous ranger teams on Country.
  • Environmental science/ natural resource management/ ecology/ conservation programs.
  • An understanding of how to build and support non-partisan strategic advocacy and campaigns.

We do not necessarily require tertiary qualifications in environmental or natural resource management, however this may be an advantage if you do have it.

If you have specific knowledge or skills in specific geographic regions or locations, please also tell us about that, and any links you may have with relevant organisations.
