There are a great range of tools and calculators to assist red meat producers in making decisions in their businesses. Over the following weeks, in the series 'Ag Tools for Livestock Producers', I will highlight a few tools available for free to Australian farmers.

The first round of tools, Pasture Tools & Calculators, can be found below:

The Pasture Improvement Calculator

The costs and benefits of resowing pastures to livestock, soils and the environment.
Developed by EverGraze, this calculator helps to determine the costs and benefits of resowing pastures compared to current practice.

The tool allows inputs of:

  • Costs of resowing.
  • Benefits of the resown pastures to livestock.
  • Soils and the environment at any given financial values (ie different interest rates, tax rates, gross margins etc).

The Phosphorus Tool:

How to use soil testing information to plan fertiliser and livestock investments.
The soil phosphorus tool or 'Five Easy Steps' allows producers and advisors to understand the value of soil testing and how to use soil test information to plan fertiliser and livestock investments. It is designed as a framework for understanding and planning the use of phosphorus (P) fertilisers.

The tool is intended to assist producers in determining suitable levels of P-fertilisation of temperate pastures grazed by sheep and beef cattle on acid soils in southern Australia. However, fertiliser decisions are made by the user – not the tool.

The Feedbase Planning & Budgeting Tool

Developed by EverGraze, this calculator assists with:

  • Planning rotational grazing systems
  • Determining appropriate stocking rates
  • Calculating pasture growth rates
  • Determining how long paddocks will last
  • Calculating the most economical ration stock.

Pasture Paramedic

'Pasture Paramedic' is a decision-making tool that allows rapid assessment of pasture condition in the medium to high rainfall zones of southern Australia, northern NSW and the WA wheatbelt.
The tool is used in the paddock to measure the quality and quantity of available pastures and identify requirements for pasture renovation or rejuvenation. The resources associated with the tool provide useful images and notes to identify and assess common pastures, clovers and weeds.

To obtain the tool, you will need to undertake training. To contact a training deliverer in northern NSW, the WA wheatbelt or in the medium to high rainfall zones of southern Australia, contact MLA Project Manager, Andrew Morelli at amorelli@mla.com.au.

Pasture Trial Network

This tool allows you to assess and compare the performance of more than 100 pasture varieties across the key pasture species for the red meat industry.

Tools found via MLA.
