Rainbow and District Landcare Group is set to welcome a hundred visitors to help plant native species in the area known as Rainbow Rises on Saturday July 8.

Chair Bruce Heinrich said the planting was unique because Project Hindmarsh's organiser, the Hindmarsh Landcare Network, was attempting to revegetate a rare site of clay lunette west of the
    town.

"If this planting is successful there's scope to expand the planting and recreate the Rainbow Rises annual flowering event that some say gave the town its name,” Mr Heinrich said.

Project Hindmarsh coordinator Jonathan Starks said they would be following along with the planting Rainbow P-12 College did last week at Rainbow Lake.

“Along with a range of native wildflower species will be food plants for butterflies," he said.

"In partnership with Zoos Victoria, we'll be planting creeping boobialla in the hope of establishing another population of the endangered golden-rayed blue butterfly in the area.

"One of the wildflowers we'll be planting is the poached-egg daisy - long gone from the area, but such an iconic desert bloom.

"To encourage the wildflowers to grow and to restore soil microbial activity we'll be adding worm castings to the soil around the plants."

Mr Starks said the Project Hindmarsh planting extravaganza aimed to plant 6000 trees, shrubs, herbs and grasses.

Local families are welcome to participate on the day, but are asked to register first by emailing group secretary Bernard Young at bernard.young54@gmail.com, or calling 0417 236 840.
