The Local Landcare Legends for October 2023 are the Shady Grove Bushcare team, who hosted a fabulous event at Littlehampton on Sunday October 15.

The bush care group are keen to have more volunteers protect a parcel of land owned by the Unitarian Church on Peramangk land. They hosted an information session and afternoon tea to bring landholders together and learn what they can do to help. A highlight was having Peramangk elder Ivan-Tiwu Copley share his cultural knowledge and provide a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony.

It was very inspiring to meet volunteers who have been protecting this beautiful patch of remnant vegetation, some for over 25 years!
Although Shady Grove bushland is less than 5 acres, it packs a punch with more than 70 native plant species, including 23 species of native orchids!

It was a chance to let the community know the importance of protecting these remaining patches of biodiversity that are being threatened by exotic weeds, pest animals and land clearance. Attendees learnt about the importance of controlling weeds and the neighbours learnt about the importance of having good bushland on their boundaries.

Landscapes Hills and Fleurieu are proud to support this Grassroots Grant recipient and could see them put their PPE and new tools to good use to carefully undertake sensitive weed control.
