Invasive Weeds & Pests

Biological Control of Invasive Environmental Weeds

24-06-2022 07:00

Invasive weeds threatening natural assets will most likely increase in the future as climate change prompts further extreme drought, fire, and flood events. The only feasible management option for environmental weeds at the landscape scale is classical biological control (biocontrol). Since 2016, environmental weeds have been the focus of a major biocontrol initiative to deliver new biocontrol agents for priority environmental weeds in NSW. Research is underway to determine the safety of candidate biocontrol agents for a range of weeds, notably a blight fungus from France on sea spurge and a stem-wilting insect from South Africa on leaf cactus.
