Jallukar's Native Grasslands Restoration in Action

24-06-2022 07:00

The Jallukar Landcare Group has made the restoration of native grasslands via the expansion of community capability its number one priority. Beginning in 2016, the four-year project to generate seed supply and restore cleared grasslands culminated in 2020 with the planting of 40kg of seeds across 1.6 hectares. A feat impossible without the many hours spent collecting, storing, and cataloguing wild field grass seeds in 2016, and establishing seed production areas, including nursery propagation and mass plant beds, in 2017/8, the project now looks to the future as the Jallukar Landcare Group assesses new planting sites. Drawing on the expertise of Greening Australia, Pomonal Wildflower Nursery, Grampians Australian Plant Society, the WAMA, local botanic experts, and local volunteers, the Jallukar Landcare Group — alongside collaborators, Landcare Groups of Bellarine and Woorndoo — built upon peoples love of native grasslands to pioneer land restoration from the grass up.
